We’ve been working with this block since 2011 (the winery’s first vintage) and have strived to create a unique expression for this wine.
After years of experimenting with cleaner styles, including tank fermentation and no skin contact, and with mixed feelings about the end results, we decided to push the wine in a different direction in 2019. For that vintage, we typically left early-harvested grapes in contact with the skins whole for 4-12 hours before pressing, without adding SO2 at that stage. We then switched fermentation to neutral French oak barrels, where the wine remained in contact with the lees until bottling.
This vineyard parcel is also unusual, featuring a vineyard blend of eight different clones, including clones from France, Italy, and California. This combination creates a diverse flavor profile and complexity.
The wine exhibits aromas of soft, acidic lemon, star fruit, and fresh lemongrass. Skin contact and barrel fermentation give this wine a well-rounded finish, balancing bright, textured tones. Try it with salty oysters, asparagus, and razor clams in a white wine, butter, and garlic sauce, or rotisserie chicken with rosemary and lemon.
